Concretion morphologies reflecting diagenetic and epigenetic pathways

Due to complex physicochemical processes, concretions develop variable, but distinctive morphologies. Reflecting the state of the sediment in subsequent stages of diagenesis and epigenesis, they deserve a study and systematization in their own right. At the same time, concretional morphologies illustrate the effect of hierarchic self-organization, which is a basic element also in biological evolution.
